Kobe quake takes toll on Osaka as business slows
Article Abstract:
Sources in Japan report that the effects of the recent earthquake in Kobe, Japan, have not been limited to the city itself; neighboring Osaka is also experiencing difficulties as a direct result of the disaster. There are few external signs of the earthquakes's impact on Osaka as people go about their normal routines but there is an undeniably depressed mood among the city's residents and businesses. Observers have especially noted the slowdown in business activity as consumers refrain from making purchases because of sympathy with the quake victims.

Economic upswing may be bad news for bonds in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japanese government bonds became attractive during the early 1990s because of the country's stagnant economy and price inflation. However, the weakening of the Japanese yen against major currencies, coupled with the government's recession-fighting measures, could adversely affect government bonds. Consequently, many investment advisers warn against purchasing Japanese government bonds.
