Article Abstract:
Banking companies expect good results from Finnish listed companies in 1998 since the economical growth was faster than expected in the first half of the year. Profitability is expected to improve also in 1999 even if forecasts have been lowered after the summer. In Finland, outlooks have deteriorated most in the forest industry and in manufacturing industry. Also, the food industry is suffering at the moment. Analysts have only positive things to say about Finland's Nokia. According to chief analyst Niklas Geust of FIM Banking Company, year 1998 will be the top year for companies' profitability. The remainder of 1998 does not seem fairly good but it will not get to ruin the entire year. According to information gathered by Barra, international banking companies expect a result improvement of nearly 20% for the largest Finnish listed companies. The total profits are estimated to increase to FIM 47bn (USD 9bn). In 1999 the profits should rise to nearly FIM 53bn. The increase is mostly due to Nokia.

Article Abstract:
The Finnish insurance companies are planning to restrict companies' indemnity insurance policies to not cover for breakage or malfunction of machines and equipment caused by the change of the millennium. The plan is to restrict the policies already from the beginning of 1999. The only damage to still be covered for in 2000 would be fires and physical injuries. The restrictions are to clarify the liabilities to pay indemnity. To cover all damage caused by the year 2000 would be too expensive. Home insurance policies are not expected to be altered.

Article Abstract:
The Finnish Cooperative banks have lowered their economic growth estimate for 1999 by 0.5 percentage points. The banks now estimate Finland's economic growth rate to be 3%. Exports are estimated to grow by 5.5% and imports by 7.5%. The consumer prices are forecast to increase by 1.5%. Unemployment rate is estimated to be 10.5%. According to Cooperative banks' economist Matti Huomo, the deteriorated international economic situation may affect the behaviour of Finnish consumers. Crisis spread negative sentiments even if they did not affect exports.
