LDP sets tax-cut plan
Article Abstract:
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan is considering the implementation of tax cut procedures to the country's $120 million austerity package, in a move that marks the government's commitment to re-establish its falling economy. Although the total tax amount to be deducted from the package has yet been determined by LDP legislators, sources revealed that most will come from public works. The tax cut proposal, cited by its proponents as a countermeasure against recession, has been strongly criticized by other law makers.

World Cup co-hosts now must learn how to share
Article Abstract:
The Federation Internationale de Football Assn.'s decision to allow Japan and South Korea to co-host the 2002 World Cup soccer finals was intended to avoid the political ramifications of choosing between the two former enemies. Although the decision is expected to minimize the economic benefits of the games and create logistical problems, acting as co-hosts will give Japan and South Korea an opportunity to overcome their historical grudges and strengthen bilateral relations.

Yaohan gets cool response
Article Abstract:
The stock of Yaohan Japan Corp. continues to fluctuate despite the corporate restructuring announced in early Feb 1997. The company's financial problems were attributed to its heavy debt used to finance its Asian investments and the performance of its general merchandise stores. Yaohan has launched a plan that would cut its assets from Y178.92 billion to Y120 billion by selling some of company-owned stores in Japan.
