LEATHER INDUSTRY IN INDIA: EXPORTS
Article Abstract:
The Indian leather industry accounts for about 7 percent of the country's total exports and is the fourth biggest foreign exchange earner. The total exports of leather and leather products declined by 8.47 percent in dollar terms to $1469.75 million in 1997-98 against $1605.82 million in 1996-97. Out of the total leather exports in 1997-98, finished leather was valued at $287.5 million, leather footwear at $271.46 million, footwear components at $238.29 million, leather garments at $412.84 million and leather goods at $259.66 million. The domestic leather industry has been affected by emerging competition from countries like China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam and the constant fluctuation of European currencies. The mass closure of domestic tanneries in 1996-97 and frequent policy changes by the government have also adversely affected the industry. (khr)

LEATHER INDUSTRY GETS A RAW DEAL
Article Abstract:
Indian leather industry had hoped to increase its exports by 20 percent in 1998-99 and garner a 10 percent share in the global market by 2000 AD. The government has levied an eight percent non Modvatable duty on imports for the leather industry. The customs duty is cut to five percent from 20 percent on imported machinery for the leather industry. This is likely to encourage the modernisation of the tanning industry. (rk)
