LIGHT AT THE END OF THE LONG AND DARK TUNNEL?
Article Abstract:
Despatches of cement increased by 4.73 percent in the 9 months ended December 1998 (9.5 percent in the same period of 1997). Cement output increased to 7.23 million tonnes in December 1998 from 6.53 million tonnes in November 1998. In October 1998 and September 1998, cement production was 6.21 million tonnes and 5.74 million tonnes respectively. despatches of cement increased by 8 percent to 7.18 million tonnes in December 1998 from 6.64 million tonnes in November 1998. They were 6.21 million tonnes in October 1998 and 5.72 million tonnes in September 1998. The Government of India, which accounts for 40-50 percent of the cement offtake of 100 million tonnes of annual production, has reduced its purchases from 1996-97. The additional capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum, set up during 1993-94 - 1997-98, had led to a glut in the market. Capacity utilisation had declined to 70-72 percent from 79-80 percent during 1993-94 - 1997-98. The cement industry is undergoing a major transformation. Modi Cement and Raasi Cement have been taken over and DLF, Sanghi Cement and Saurashtra Cement are likely to be bought out. Gujarat Ambuja, Larsen & Toubro and Grasim Industries are consolidating their cement businesses. (rk) (kvr)
