Labour market structure
Article Abstract:
The population of the UK is broadly divided into the economically active and the economically inactive. Within the economically active category, there are subdivisions for those who are employed and those who are unemployed. There are considerable difficulties associated with determining exactly how to define unemployment. It is also possible to classify employment in many different ways. The structure of the labour market is constantly changing through exposure to economic, political and social forces.

Trade unions: recent trends in numbers and membership
Article Abstract:
UK labor unions have seen a long term drop in membership from 13.3 million members in 1979 to 9 million in 1994. Unions have been affected by a number of factors such as high levels of unemployment, privatization, an increase in the proportion of part-time women workers in the labor force, and a drop in union density. The trend has been attributed in part to the policies of the UK Conservative government, but is evident at international level, so wider forces may be at work.

Patterns of employment
Article Abstract:
Employment can vary according to industries, regions, occupations, age, and other factors. Technological change can affect industrial patterns, as can changes in tastes. Regions are affected because industries may be concentrated in particular regions which are affected by the growth and decline of those industries. Women have entered the labor market in increasing numbers in the United Kingdom, and this is linked to an increase in part-time employment.
