Article Abstract:

In France, the National Packaging Council has launched the first packaging waste prevention catalogue. This document indicates 98 ways to reduce waste at the source. Simplifying the packaging system and reducing the size of packaging among the principal paths to improvement, and they have a considerable economic impact. They would save 28,000 tonnes of packaging per year, and would mean reducing transport by 110,000 pallets, and would reduce 12% of waste at the source. The National Packaging Council was created in 1997, and includes the various actors involved in packaging waste - materials and packaging manufacturers, approved companies, elected local officials, consumer representatives, and environmental protection organisations. The Council is set up in order promote collaboration among all of these groups. The calculation of contributions to approved companies, such as Eco-Emballages and Adelphe may be modified. An arrangement which provides greater encouragement may be set up in order to promote reduction of waste at the source.

Marie, the French food company, has launched 'Les Id es du Monde' , a range of frozen, ready-made meals with a rice base, packaged in sachets of between 500g and 900g. The range comes in 5 varieties: Cantonese rice, sweet and sour chicken with rice, curried shrimp and fish with rice, Indian rice, and Creole chicken with rice. The products are priced at between FFr 25 and FFr 32.
