Article Abstract:

Finnish Pohjolan Voima and Rautaruukki have signed a letter of intent for Pohjolan Voima to build the Rautaruukki's Raahe steel factory a new type gas combination power station which will utilize more effectively the gas generated in the steel production process. The final building decision is expected in spring 1999 when profitability calculations are ready. The investment costs are estimated at Fmk 750mn (US$ 136mn). The power station is planned to be ready towards the end of 2001 after which Rautaruukki would in Finland be self-sufficient in energy. The new 150MW power station will be enclosed with the present power station of the Raahe steel factory. The power station would produce approx. 2% of Finland's electricity demand. According to Rautaruukki, the project is connected with the expansion of steel production which is estimated to increase by 0.3mn tons to 2.8mn tons by 2002. According to Rautaruukki, there are only two corresponding power stations in the world.

Telia syytt Radiolinjaa ja Soneraa verkkosyrjinn st

Article Abstract:

Telia Finland has handed in a complaint to the Finnish competition authorities on Finnish Radiolinja and Sonera on being reluctant to allow so called network visits. According to Telia, the companies will not rent Telia their gsm networks with the same conditions as to foreign teleoperators. Telia has their own mobile phone network in Finland but it only covers the largest towns. If Telia clients could use the Sonera or Radiolinja networks elsewhere Telia would gain a national network without investing on base stations. According to the Finnish Ministry of Communications, a telecom company does not, at least not yet, have to allow their local competitor to use their network. The usage can be agreed upon but there is no obligation.

Euro-Samaran valmistus loppuu Uudessakaupungissa

Article Abstract:

Finland's Valmet Automotive will end the production of Euro-Samara cars in July 1998. The original production agreement with Russian Eurolada in 1996 was for three years and the planned production was 60,000 cars. However, only 15,000 cars have been produced. The demand has not responded to expectations. Euro-Samara production gives work to approx. 100 people. The ending of Euro-Samara will not affect the production of Saab Cabriolet and Porsche Boxster, produced at the same plant. According to Valmet Automotive, the Euro-Samara production was not a mistake as such. The alterations and improvements of the car just were not sufficient enough in relation to the price.
