According to estimates, the pharmaceutical research market may double by the year 2001. The vitality of this market, which is growing 20% per year, is due to the rise in sub-contracting in the pharmaceutical industry, a development favoured by constraints in terms of economics and regulations facing pharmaceutical laboratories. Subcontracting part of the research enables laboratories to reduce financial and human risks.

The rate of VAT in the French restaurant trade is set at 20%, although many people, including politicians, oppose this rate, a measure which is seen as unacceptable by the European commission. A unique rate of 15% must be introduced (which would lead to a FFr 20bn loss in revenue for the state) and a rise of 10% in the rate of VAT on fast food, which would penalise young people according to the government.
