Article Abstract:
By the year 2002, the five main players in Spain's steel industry, GSB, Aceralia, Sidenor, Ucin and Celsa, will have invested over Pta 64,000mn in the Basque country. The surge in the sector is due mainly to growth in the automotive business, as well as increased business in construction and domestic appliances. The investment budget break-down by group is: Ucin, Pta 5,000mn for its facilities in Orbegozo in Zumarraga and in Azpeitia. Celsa will invest Pta 2,500mn in Laminados Arregui. GSB has a budget of Pta 13,000mn for its plants in Legazpi and Azkoitia in Guipuzcoa. Sidenor will invest Pta 18,000mn in its plants in Basauri (Vizcaya). Aceralia has the largest investment budget, Pta 25,000mn, which will be to double capacity at ACB (Aceria Compacta de Bizcaia) to 1.8mn tonnes.

French-owned hypermarket chain in Spain Continente will invest Pta 50,000mn over a three-year period to open ten hypermarkets in Spain In 1998 Continente also plans to begin remodelling the Simago supermarket chain, which will be called Champion. During the recent food sector encounter organised by the IESE, the president of Continente dispelled the idea of more acquisitions in Spain by the Promodes group of France, claiming there are not many opportunities out there which would be valuable to shareholders.

Although both companies are still in the due diligence process, the Dutch retail group Ahold and the Spanish supermarket chain Dialco (majority owned by the Cobreros family) have partly presented their project. Plans are to reach 300 supermarkets in the Andalusia region in three years (through acquisitions and new openings). Total investment amount to Pta 30,000mn. At the same time, the Cobreros family is said to be available in ceding the majority participation of Dialco to Ahold. *
