The UK electoral system exaggerates narrow victories at the polls, as the May 1997 results demonstrate: Labour won 43% of the vote, but more than 60% of the seats in Parliament, while the Conservatives' 31% showing earned them just 25% of the seats. The newly-elected Labour Party plans a referendum on proportional representation.

An Economist!MORI poll indicates what British voters expect of the new Labor Party government, led by Prime Minister Tony Blair. The poll shows voters are willing to except small tax increases to keep down the rate of inflation and they are willing to see government spending increase.
