The case of motor neurone disease sufferer Diane Pretty has heightened the debate over euthanasia in the UK. Because Pretty is now paralysed and unable to commit suicide unaided, she is seeking a legal ruling that her husband would be able to help her without fearing prosecution.

There is considerable debate on the role doctors play in euthanasia and the potential abuses that goes with it. Many governments across the world continue to try and formulate an encompassing law regarding euthanasia but have not yet gone as far as defining terms.

Michigan has passed a law banning assistance to anyone who wants to commit suicide, even the terminally ill. The law is vague and does not represent public opinion, but referendums preserving the right to death in California and Washington State recently failed.
