Article Abstract:
The fall of Mexico's financial markets, caused by the sharp decline in the value of the peso, has led to less drastic downturns in other Latin American markets. Doubts about Mexico's capacity to pay off its debts are legitimate, but comparisons between its markets and others in Latin America are less so.

Many Latin American nations are doing away with high tariffs and other protectionist trade policies in favor of a free trade, export-driven approach. Chile's economy has greatly benefited from trade liberalization, as have the economies of Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
