Laughing when it hurts
Article Abstract:
South African culture has changed with the end of apartheid, and criminal violence is a new theme for writers. Female gangsters provide a theme for 'The Sexy Girls', a new motion picture. A new play in Johannesburg shows an impoverished Afrikaaner seeking to burgle the home of a black who has become prosperous. Some of the audience found the torture scenes amusing, which underlines the message that South Africans have become insensitive to brutality.
