Lazarus of the East?
Article Abstract:
South Korea has seen a drop in unemployment and a growth in gross domestic product in 1st qtr 1999, reversing the poor performance of 1998, when GDP fell by 6.1%. The government has provided support for the banks and sought to reduce the debts of the conglomerates. Foreign exchange reserves have increased. There is still a need for further reform of the financial system, and there is fear of rising unemployment if the conglomerates shed workers rapidly. The banking system is mainly owned by the state, and the problem of lack of accountability may not have been resolved.
