Leaderless Russia: the continuing bad health of Russia's president may mean another election - sooner rather than later

Some Russians believe that Yeltsin will never regain his health and thus he should stepdown for a new election. Possible successors, including Alexander Lebed and Anatoly Chubais, are discussed. Of the Russians polled, 86% said Yeltsin should retire, and 25% said they would vote for Lebed.

The man who may lead Russia during Yeltsin's surgery and recovery is Anatoly Chubais, the chief of staff. Prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin is supposed to take over under Russian law, but Chubais is a more effective leader, especially in the area of financial reform.

Yeltsin will probably not be able to adequately govern Russia for a while because of his impending heart surgery. There are several men who might govern in his place, including Viktor Chernomyrdin and Anatoly Chubais, who managed Yeltsin's presidential campaign.
