Small brush, big splash: a retrospective in Hong Kong for a grand tradition
Article Abstract:
Three exhibitions now at the Hong Kong Museum of Art explore Chinese ink painting in the 20th century. The major show, Twentieth Century Chinese Painting: Tradition and Innovation, presents the diversity of traditional painting from the Qing dynasty's decline to the 1990s. The other exhibitions show the work of Huang Binhong (1865-1955) and Wu Guanzhong (1919- ). The scope of Tradition and Innovation, which eschews Western-style painting, nevertheless encompasses subtle political content.
