Zhu aims to leave his mark on economic reforms
Article Abstract:
Zhu, Rongji, China's premier, is trying to leave his mark on the economic reforms he has supported for a decade. While is is promoting membership in the World Trade Organization, he is also warning that many of the provinces are not prepared, having barely begun to revise their regulations that protect local industries and impair free competition. Zhu's style and his efforts at economic reform are discussed.

Legislature approves a cabinet of younger technocrats: new officials are hoping to implement the ambitious reforms of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has appointed several new officials to occupy the top economic posts in the country. Most of Zhu Rongji's appointees are experienced economists and managers and some have even been taken from the private sector. The appointees occupy the four vice premier positions and the appointees include former central bank governor Dai Xianglong, former trade minister Li Lanqing, former foreign minister Qian Qichen, and Wen Jiabao. All four vice premiers are expected to spearhead the planned reforms of Premier Zhu Rongji.
