Article Abstract:
The Asian crisis of 1998 in which many banks had been figuratively burnt has helped them to clean up their acts and close a lot of bad debts, but this may not mark the end of bad debts in the Asian economy. Observers feel that there is more probability of it to exist, looking at the credit growth of a lot of countries in the region and suggest that if the non-performing loans are disposed, it shall prove to be beneficial to the economy.

Asian companies are well placed to benefit from global economic recovery. The possibility of war in the Middle East, however, is making investors nervous and analysts are eying carefully the U.S. stock markets and the U.S. dollar.

Little urge to manage

The banks in Asia are incompetent, small and too many. Mergers hardly happen. This is due to the policy makers being scared of letting foreigners taking over the banks.
