Let Japan sail forth
Article Abstract:
The Japanese parliament will consider changes to allow its armed forces to take a more active role in backing the US in troubled areas in the region. The planned changes are minor, and there is a case for Japan being more active in military operations. The planned changes may not be enough in the event of a dispute between the US and China over Taiwan, or between North and South Korea. There may be concerns about Japan become more active in military terms, but Japan is more likely to be able to work with the US if greater freedom is given to the Japanese armed forces.

Step out, Japan
Article Abstract:
Japan must assume a more activist posture in military affairs, even if it means abrogating the post-World War II constitutional restrictions on militarism. Part of the new security arrangement Japan might arrive at should include a commitment of military forces to UN peacekeeping missions.
