Like herrings in a barrel
Article Abstract:
Thomas Malthus made predictions about population growth which have been only partly correct. The population has grown rapidly, but growth has also slowed in richer countries. Infectious diseases and food shortages had more effect prior to the industrial revolution, and infectious disease has been important in the 20th century, though less so. Birth rates tend to slow after death rates, but there has been a slowdown even in developing countries. There is concern about an ageing population in some countries, and also fear that having a smaller proportion of the world's population may mean having less influence. There is also hope that population trends may have stabilized by 2100.
