Lines of control: Thai factory fire raises questions for Charoen Pokphand
Article Abstract:
New documents have linked Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand (CP) with Kader Industrial, the company that ran a toy factory in Bangkok, Thailand that burned to the ground on May 10, 1993, killing 189 employees. CP admitted that some of its directors owned part of the plant but denied any liability. However, documents show that Dhanin Chiaravanont and 11 other CP directors were shareholders of Honbo Investment, a company linked to Kader through another company called KCP Toys. Honbo ran the factory where the fire occurred under a joint management agreement.

Article Abstract:
Thailand's CP Group is moving aggressively to offer state-of-the-art video and telecommunications services, in part taking advantage of the telephone lines it operates through TelecomAsia, a subsidiary. It will launch the Universal Cable TV Network, or UTV, on Mar 15, and is working with the US regional phone company Nynex to develop more sophisticated services such as videoconferencing, voice recognition, and video-on-demand. Skeptics abound, but Nynex says it has been surprised at the speed and sophistication so far.

Charoen Pokphand (CP) has some 130 joint ventures (JVs) in China with Shanghai accounting for 28 of these. CP aims to work with up to 10 companies from Thailand, involving them in JVs in China. The group aims to expand in China and concessions could be more easily obtainable from China if new funds are brought in from Thailand. CP has already brought SSUP, a Thai cosmetics producer, into a project to set up a cosmetics plant in China, with SSUP and CP each holding 45% of the JV.
