Linklaters fends off the young pretenders

Linklaters & Paines, Slaughter and May and Freshfields are the top three legal advisers acting for a financial advisers or company in UK public takeovers. However the big three City law firms could face competition from advisers such as Lovell White Durrant and Denton Hall. Lovell White Durrant is in fourth place and it believes it is able to handle transactions as large as the three top firms. Denton Hall has gained a reputation in corporate finance.

Linklaters leads the way in legal M&A

The leading law firm advising on UK public company merger and acquisition transactions in 1996 was Linklaters and Paines, followed by Slaughter and May and Freshfields. Linklaters was involved in 19 deals in 1996, at a total value of 19 billion pounds sterling, while Slaughter and May advised on 25 deals and Freshfields on 17. Linklaters' success is mainly attributable to its involvement in deals worth more than 1 billion pounds sterling.

Linklaters proves European pedigree

Linklaters & Alliance has won the law firm of the year award in Acquisition Monthly's Awards 2000. Its performance in 1999 justified its decision to join a pan-European alliance. It gained praise for advising Vodafone on its 56 billion pounds sterling takeover of Airtouch, and also strengthened existing corporate relationships. It had a wide geographic reach, advising Pacificorp in the US on its $12.6 billion purchase by Scottish Power.
