It's time to dispel the myths about epilepsy
Article Abstract:
People witnessing an epileptic seizure tend to react with apprehension and uncertainty, but the only two actions that are required are that the victim be protected from the fall and that medical help be summoned. Two actions that should not be taken are trying to hold the victim down and trying to place an object between the victim's teeth. Both actions can result in much more damage than the seizure itself, although it is wise to move any sharp objects the victim may hit out of the way. The forms of epilepsy share one characteristic: a sudden disturbance in electrical communication in the brain, producing unconsciousness and uncontrollable body motions. Precautions to take for epileptics in the work force are described.
