Venture capitalists in the area around Manchester, England, have all developed niche activities. However, there is a general move to respond to the changing business climate. Barclays Private Equity, for example, has organized sectorally, with key personnel responsible for investments in each sector. 3i believes that there is growing activity in areas including hi-technology and buy-and-build. It is becoming clear that a local presence is useful, but not vital for doing deals in the area.

Barbarians return to Europe

The opening of a London office by US-based venture capital firm Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts (KKR) is expected to increase the European investment market by up to $3 billion, with the main focus on large, prestigious companies. A $400 million KKR-led German deal collapsed in October 1998, although KKR are keen to stress its strengths in the market. Several other top US-based venture capital firms are setting up European funds for 1999.
