Lock and key
Article Abstract:
Some economists argue that monopoly power is promoted by new technology since increasing returns have become more important, giving a greater advantage to larger firms. Consumers can become locked into products which are not ideal due to the high costs of changing to a new product. There is a debate as to the extent to which this occurs. Some theorists argue that products which survive are better than those that do not, and myths surrounding allegedly bad products are shown to be untrue.

Citizen Gates
Article Abstract:
US software company Microsoft will invest around $400 million on media projects in 1996. Bill Gates, the company's founder, has stated that he is willing to lose $1 billion on media investments in the near future. It appears strange that Microsoft should wish to move into media, as its profits are much greater than those of even the most successful media companies. However, Microsoft has $7 billion in cash, and has chosen to invest this rather than return it to shareholders.
