Lone ranger bets on Indonesia: H-P helps clients skirt cash crisis by offering credit, leasing equipment
Article Abstract:
Computer maker Hewlett-Packard is playing angel to its Asian customers and suppliers, providing loans to keep its partners afloat. The $43 bil company's financing business is expected to increase by 50% for 1998, reaching the $1 bil level. The company is also going into the computer leasing business to retain many of its customers who are unable to shell out the hard cash needed for computer purchases. Many Asian firms are taking advantage of the offer, since the high interest rates on computer leases are are better than the higher interest rates on loans made in domestic currencies and made sweeter by the replacement clauses between customer and computer manufacturer.
