Post-vote Jakarta: slow gait
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's stock market is expected to make slow gains in the wake of the May 29, 1997 parliamentary elections. Analysts had expected the market to make a huge rally after the election, but prices did not tumble during the violence-marred election as predicted. The market's indifference, thus did not result in buying opportunities that analysts had expected. Overall, fund managers and analysts say the country's economic fundamentals continue to be good, while political issues have receded.

Indonesian chain Matahari is growing out of appeal
Article Abstract:
The giant department store chain Matahari Putra Primi is going out of favor among stock analysts and fund managers. Although many admire the company, they are concerned that it is expanding too fast, raising worries about how well the company can address its growth and how much its loans could undermine profitability. Analysts contend that it may offer substantial short-term results for investors but are skeptical that it can outperform the Jakarta Composite Index in 1996.

Selected consumer shares may pay off in Indonesia
Article Abstract:
More investors are placing their money on Indonesian consumer-sector stocks, which have been benefiting from the effects of rising incomes in the country. Consumer-sector stocks offer excellent liquidity and high market capitalization. In addition, people who invest in them do not risk underperforming the index. Analysts warn, however, that to maximize gains from such stocks, investors in the Jakarta Stock Exchange need to shop for stocks selectively.
