Long live the loan
Article Abstract:
Loans were once seen as likely to be overtaken by disintermediation, but syndicated loans have again become important in 1999, and this is especially evident in contrast with 1989. Public debt markets expanded during the late 1980s, and corporate bonds appeared to be cheaper than loans as a means of raising funds, except for blue chip borrowers. Loans have since become more competitive and lending for mergers has increased in 1999, though this could change in 2000.

Chase's new face
Article Abstract:
The co-bosses of Chase Manhattan Bank, Tom Labrecque and Walter Shipley, are to leave the company, and William Harrison will take over. Chase performed well in the financial crisis of 1998 which followed the Russian debt default. There is still a further test to come when the US economy ceases to grow, since the impact of this on the portfolio of Chase has yet to be tested. The company has sought a merger partner to remedy not having an equity business.
