From Winterthur to Calcutta
Article Abstract:
The involvement of Swiss trading firms in India can be traced back to the 18th century, when Jacques Biedermann established his trading firm Societe Maritimes Suisses which operated in Calcutta and Pondicherry. Later, the Volkart Brothers played a major role in the development of India's trade in cotton, coffee and and agricultural produce. Currently, both countries have only a small share in each other's foreign trade markets. Bilateral trade was estimated at over Sfr 1,000-million in 1997. Switzerland's exports to India was Sfr 600 million while India's exports to Switzerland was more than Sfr 450 million.
