Long lived lifter
Article Abstract:
US Army is planning to upgrade the CH-47D Chinook to the new Improved Cargo Helicopter (ICH) standard to extend the life of the heavy lifter by another 20 years. The D model helicopters can now be found in 22 units of the service around the world with 431 in the field, while 17 international clients are also operating them. The Army plans to upgrade the CH-47D Chinook to link into the Force XXI digital battlefield and until multi-service Joint Tactical Rotorcraft enters service. As much as 300 Chinook D models are to be remanufactured into ICHs with changes including the new engine GA-714A and others that would lessen major parts found in the helicopter, as well as decrease maintenance needed.

Uprooting the seeds of destruction
Article Abstract:
Military helicopters will take a more prominent role in mine countermeasures (MCM) with the advent of new technology. The Sikorsky MH- 53E Sea Dragon remains the world's only dedicated MCM helicopter, but the US Navy is sponsoring development of several MCM technologies that can be fitted into small ships' helicopters. Programs include the Magic Lantern, which uses blue laser to detect objects under water, and a rapid airborne mine clearance system (RAMICS), which is envisioned not only to clear mines but also to clear them.
