Alpinvest is adopting a flexible approach to the middle market, regarding this as good way to benefit from many interesting investment opportunities. Alpinvest Holding, the core company of the group, invested more than Dm120 million in Germany in 1998. Deals included the provision of expansion capital to decorative paper printer Suddekor. The firm is currently raising a Dm585 million private equity fund aimed at buyout deals in Germany and other leading western European countries.

The European high yield market has exceeded its 1997 high by $4.8 billion. Interim reports for 1998 put the high yield bond market at $10.6 billion, of which 43% of transactions are in local currencies. Market growth has coincided with growth in the buyout market, which currently ranks second to the telecommunications sector as the largest source for new high yield paper.
