Look, no wires
Article Abstract:
UK telecommunications concern Vodafone has made a $62 billion bid for mobile telecommunications operator AirTouch. If the deal is approved by regulators in both the UK and the US, the new operation will have market value of more than $130 billion on the basis of Vodafone's current cashflow multiple of 22.5. It will take some time to unite the two companies' activities, and there may be challenges associated with establishing a single strong international brand. There are particular concerns about the fact that Vodafone MD Chris Gent and AirTouch Chief Executive Sam Ginn are very different from each other.

Touchdown for Vodafone
Article Abstract:
Vodafone had to battle against Bell Atlantic to bring about its $56 billion purchase of Airtouch. Goldman Sachs, which advised Vodafone, had been tracking Airtouch for some time, but had been unable to engineer an agreement throughout 1998. It was necessary to take swift action when it became clear that Bell Atlantic was interested in Airtouch. The merged operation has great potential, with both companies holding stakes in the Globalstar project, a satellite network made up of 12 leading telecommunications carriers.

Look and learn
Article Abstract:
Ernst Gombrich is an art historian who sees himself as a product of the Central European middle classes. He is keen on music and sees this as more gripping than visual art. His work 'The Story of Art' was begun during the 1939-1945 war and there have been 6 million copies sold since it was published in 1950. He set out a theory of perception and this and other aspects of the work excited controversy. He was also able to popularise his subject.
