Article Abstract:
Seiyu is a Japanese retailer which has developed a rigorous restructuring plan to tackle its problem of debt following diversification away from the core grocery business. The company has been hit by competition from specialist retailers which can offer better quality and price than conglomerates. Four Seiyu subsidiaries have been sold and 16 shut down, with further sales planned. The company also plans to close branches that perform poorly, and invest in its Food Plus grocery chain. Some good quality assets may have to be sold due to the company's debt problems.

Black marks
Article Abstract:
Marks and Spencer (M and S) is a British food and clothes retailer that has reported a drop in interim profit and is making changes after errors had been made. The company's chief executive is Peter Salsbury, and there is concern that his reforms may not go far enough. The company is spending heavily on marketing to maintain sales. M and S plans to reduce the number of suppliers and source more clothes from abroad. The company could become a takeover target, and it can offer a strong brand.
