Lost for words
Article Abstract:
German aid agency GTZ coordinated efforts to write a dictionary of terms connected with a market economy for the Lao people. Laos has been undertaking reforms since the end of the 1980s but, with no recent history of free enterprise, the language did not have the appropriate vocabulary. Lexicographers borrowed many terms from the Thai language, which has similarities to the Lao language, but they had to take care with issues of political correctness. They could not use the translation for the term purchasing power, for example, as only the ruling party can possess power in Laos.

Two steps back
Article Abstract:
The 160 candidates being fronted for the election in Laos on 21 December 1997 are mostly trusted party members or members of the military, suggesting that the party has decided to return to its old communist ways. The party has become concerned that members of the legislature are exercising too much democracy and it wants to regain control as a means of ensuring national solidarity and security. The official candidates have been selected to appeal to a wide range of ethnic groups and people in both rural and urban areas.
