Lower provisions fuel HSBC profit gain

HSBC Holdings PLC reported an improvement of 10% in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. The company was expected to see a decline in its earnings during the period. HSBC posted $4.07 billion (3.80 billion euros) in profits. During the same period in 1998, HSBC posted $3.69 billion. Analysts had predicted that the global bank would post a decline of 5%.
