Lufthansa posts dive in operating profit

Lufthansa announced that it posted a decline of 40% in its operating profits for the first-half of 1999. The German carrier made this report despite posting an improvement of 3.8% in its sales for the period. Lufthansa posted operating profits of 578 million marks (295.5 million euros) compared with 969 million marks during the same period in 1998. The carrier's sales increased to 11.3 billion marks.

Lufthansa share value declined by 1.8% following its announcement that a disappointing April and May 1999 could hurt the carrier's earnings forecast for the year. For the first quarter of 1999, Lufthansa posted pretax profits of 234 million deutschemarks (119.6 million euros). The German-based carrier also forecasted reduced pretax profits for the 1999 year to 2 billion deutschemarks.
