MADAGASCAR: REVIEW OF SUPERMARKETS
Article Abstract:
At Madagascar, supermarkets and hypermarkets are gaining ground, especially as a result of the Groupe Bourbon's efforts. The Groupe Bourbon already operates two supermarkets at Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, under the Score retail chain, and it plans to open other units there (a unit of over 4,000 square metres of sales space is scheduled for 2002-2003), and in other major cities. The other retail chains present at Madagascar are Champion (two units) Horizon Ivato, of the Chinese company Sogecoa (one unit) and Leader Price, which has just opened a supermarket with 1,500 square metres of sales space. Continent plans to open its first supermarket at Madagascar in partner ship with the Caille group in 2000-2001. According to forecasts, supermarkets and hypermarkets in Antananarivo have a potential clientele of 300,000 people.

SWITZERLAND: THE RETAIL SECTOR
Article Abstract:
The Swiss retail sector is dominated by two general retail cooperatives, Coop and Migros, which together represent 47% of the retail trade, and 60% of the food trade. They sell mainly their own brands (80% of the products at Migros). The private labels represent 42% of the sales in Switzerland, which puts it in the lead worldwide. In 1999, the retail sector posted a turnover of SFr 81bn, of which 46% was for food products, up 1.4%. Discount stores, cash-and-carry stores, factory stores, and second-hand stores (Cash Converters) also posted increases. However, there are not many hypermarkets compared with France because of the population concentration, and different consumption habits. Foreign retail chains (Carrefour, Casino, and Metro) are beginning to tackle the market, but they are hampered by the country's geographical divisions, the limited number of good places, and the difficulty in obtaining authorisations. At present, retailers are placing a priority on profitability by diversifying services, seeking better locations, and creating specialised networks. The Swiss spend 9.7% of their budget on food, a decline. In 2020, those over 50 are expected to represent the biggest section of the population, with rather high purchasing power.

AUSTRALIA: REVIEW OF RETAIL TRADE
Article Abstract:
According to estimates, the Australian retail trade made a turnover of AU$ 135bn between 1997 and 1998. Supermarkets represent 40% of the retail trade, all sectors combined, and 60% of food retail trade. The French hypermarket concept is unknown in Australia. According to the French Trade Commission in Sydney, three major groups control 31% of retail trade, all sectors combined: Coles Myer Limited, the leader with a 15.3% market share, Woolworth Limited with a 12.3% market share, and Franklin/Dairy Farm with a 3% market share. These three groups represent nearly 81% of total sales in the food sector. These three retail groups appear to be threatened by the potential arrival of Aldi, the German discount retail chain.
