MAHARASHTRA UNVEILS IT POLICY
Article Abstract:
Maharashtra announced its own comprehensive IT policy on August 11, 1998 with an objective to provide connectivity anytime, anyhow and anywhere. The policy includes fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, creation of software professional resources, promotion of infrastructure for development and the increase of computerization in government offices. The sales tax on hardware has been reduced to 2 percent while tax on packaged software has been reduced to 1 percent. Customized software has been completely exempted from sales tax. The electricity duty on IT units has been waived while octroi on IT products will be refunded. (khr)

INFOSYS DONATES PCS TO SCHOOLS
Article Abstract:
Infosys Technologies Ltd donated 138 used computers to schools in Bangalore and Mangalore. These Intel 486 chip based computers contain Microsoft works and Encarta 98 software. The computer donation forms a part of the Computer@Classrooms programme launched by Infosys and Microsoft India. Government has permitted export oriented software units to donate their used personal computers free of duty to educational institutions. This programme is aimed at increasing the computer penetration in schools. Infosys plans to donate 600 computers to educational institutes in Bangalore, Chennai and Pune. (um)
