Article Abstract:
The dam at Cahora Bassa in Mozambique will begin to produce electricity for the first time since its construction in 1975, following an agreement between South Africa, Portugal and Mozambique concerning electricity prices per kilowatt/hour. The agreement will run from 1 August 1998 to 31 December 1999, due to the present instability of financial markets. The dam belongs to the Portuguese firm HCB (Hidroel ctrica de Cahora Bassa), which is held at 82% by the Portugese state and 18% by the government of Portugal. Privatisation pour 11 entreprises d'Etat
Article Abstract:
Mali is to privatise 11 state-owned companies between 1998 and 2001. Five of them, in which the state holds only a minority share, will be totally privatised. These companies are the SMPC (Soci t Malienne des Produits Chimiques), Somaco (Soci t Malienne des Conserves), the Soci t d'Entreprise du Mali, Mali Trans Service, and the Soci t Naval du Mali (Sonam). The government of Mali will keep a 48.5% stake in the Energie du Mali company and a 20% stake in SLMTP, which rents equipment for public works. The government will maintain a 51% stake in BMCD (Banque Malienne de Cr dit et de D pot), Sonatam (the Soci t National des Tabacs et des Allumettes), ADM (Aeroports du Mali) and Sotelma (the Soci t des T l communications du Mali). *

The Mozambique Transmission Company (Motraco) which has US$ 130mn in capital stock, has been founded by Eskom, which holds a 33.3% stake, Electricidade de Mo ambique (EDM) also with a 33.3% stake, the Swaziland Electricity Board (SEB with a 15% stake, and private investors, which hold an 18.3% stake. The purpose of this new company is to coordinate South African electricity supplies to Swaziland and Mozambique. Two new power transmission lines will be built between Maputo and the Eskom stations at Arnot and Camden.
