Mahathir moves to firm his leadership of UMNO
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is moving to solidify his leadership position in the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO). Aware of the growing restiveness in UMNO ranks, Mahathir has taken several steps aimed at giving him the upper hand over his rivals in the party. Political analysts believe that Mahathir's suspicions were aroused when supporters of his protege, Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, successfully ousted several of his loyalists at low-level party elections in Jul. 1995.

Political analysts believe Dr. Mahathir, whose term as Malaysia's Prime Minister expires in 2000, is showing the public his preference for Ibrahim to become his successor.
