Mahathir taps travelers unit

Salomon Smith Barney, a division of Travelers Group Inc., is employed by the Malaysian government to bolster the country's ailing banking industry. Malaysia, which has deferred its proposed $2-billion overseas sovereign issue, has established local agencies Dhanaharta and Danamodal to dissolve nonperforming loans and reorganize the banks. Salomon Smith Barney was hired as Danamodal's financial adviser to help restructure and revive the banking sector, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Malaysia's plan to issue $2 billion worth of sovereign bonds is being eagerly anticipated by investment bankers in Asia. The country, which was ostracized by the international financial community in 1998 when it decided to impose capital controls, is expected to push through with the sovereign issuance in May 1999. Among the suitors for the Malaysian government mandate for the bonds are Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse First Boston, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Salomon Smith Barney and J.P. Morgan.

Finance chief's resignation puts Mahathir in control
Article Abstract:
The resignation of Daim Zainuddin, Malaysia's finance minister, has given Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad direct control of Malaysia's economic management. Mahathir considered Daim's policies as politically detrimental to Mahathir. Tun Daim began his political partnership with Mahathir in 1981. The question is what moves Mahathir will now make to rectify the economic policies that blamed for souring investor sentiment.
