Sales of private label breakfast cereals in Germany totalled to DM277.8 million in 1997, up 9.6% than revenues generated in 1996 for the same category and 52.8% over 1993. The increase in sales for private label cereal products in Germany has been attributed to the unstable economic environment, low levels of disposable incomes and poor consumer confidence. Private label cereal products accounted for 23.6% of the overall sales for breakfast cereals in Germany in 1997, about 10% of which is accounted for by Aldi's private label products.

The breakfast cereal market in Germany is expected to continue see growth during the 1997-2002 forecast period as a result of the continuing health trend and the rising demand for convenient quick snacks. Manufacturers of cereal products in Germany will also continue to achieve increased revenues brought by product introductions and more intensified promotions for their goods. Product introductions are expected to focus on children and adults, with private labels expected to become more popular due to economic difficulties.
