The German breakfast cereals market recorded a rise of 4.5% to DM1,177.3 million in value sales and a growth of 4.7% to 171,600 tonnes in volume in 1997 compared with 1996 data. During the 1993-1997 period, the market achieved a percentage growth of 21.3% in terms of volume translating to a 10.3% increase in real value and 18.5% rise in nominal value. The current health trend as well as the increasing demand for convenient and quick snacks prompted the steady growth during the 1993-1997 period along with the successful launches of various innovative products and line extensions.

Spain's breakfast cereals market had the hypermarket as its leading retail format with a volume share of 41% in 1997 as preference of consumers grow on one-stop shopping. The retail format saw the strongest growth in the 1993 to 1997 review period with a rise of four percentage points. The growing preference of consumers for one-stop shopping is attributed to economy of time and money. The demand for breakfast cereals through hypermarkets increased in the review period with the launching of private label lines in addition to special offers and discounts.
