Majority rules; Banharn coalition shaken by no-confidence debate
Article Abstract:
Thai Prime Minister Banharn Silparcha and his deputy interior minister Suchart Tancharoen were the targets of a no-confidence debate by opposition party legislators. Silparcha invoked his parliamentary majority to cut the debate short and survived the censure vote but drew sharp criticism for using pre-emptory tactics. Banharn's administration is dominated by provincial politicians who to be re-elected through vote-buying and patronage networks. The voice of middle-class Bangkok voters are unlikely to be heard by the government until this situation changes.

Crisis of confidence
Article Abstract:
Investors are becoming concerned about the slowdown in the Thai economy and the continuing deficit in current accounts and trade, and government explanations are little reassurance. The government suggests that the decline in economic growth is a natural result of the transition from labor-intensive industries to more advanced manufacturing industries. While the decline is evident in labor-intensive sectors, other sectors have not made up for the decline in exports.
