Daim returns to banking

Malaysia's former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin has returned to banking. Zainuddin, through his company Langkah Bahagia Sdn Bdh, has agreed to buy a 51.8% equity stake in Hock Hua Bank (Sabah) Bhd. from Hock Hua Bank Bhd. for $75.8 mil. Langkah Bahagia plans to acquire all of the bank's equity and turn it from one of the smallest into one of Malaysia's biggest banks. Zainuddin served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991.

Lending ban will avert a Thai-like crisis, Ginandjar says

The Central Bank of Indonesia has implemented a ban on property-loans from banks to prevent that nation's economic deregulation package from creating an unstable real-estate boom similar to the one that occurred in Thailand. According to Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning Ginandjar Kartasamita, eonomic deregulation has already caused banks to overextend themselves in the real estate market.
