Many large telecommunications mergers have been approved, but biggest of all, the ATT-SBC Corp deal, should not be allowed. It would subvert new laws allowing local phones companies to compete in long-distance market and vice- versa. In a few years competition may be strong enough to allow this merger.

Article Abstract:
The likelihood that SBC Communications will acquire AT&T is not guaranteed because of antitrust issues. AT&T would benefit from a merger because it faces greater telecommunications competition and has revenues lower than from previous years. Capital expenditures increased to $9 billion for 1997.

The lure of distance

Local telephone companies are looking at merging to improve their position in the industry and increase their profits. Telephone companies make much of their profit from long-distance calls, and they believe the best way to achieve these goals is to merge. Proposed ventures are also described.
