Mahathir's coalition wins easily, boosting its majority in parliament
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's ruling coalition, the National Front, captured about 162 of the 192 parliamentary seats in the recent elections, boosting its majority in the federal legislative body. The coalition's resounding victory marked an end to a decade-long decline in its popular support. Warding off rivals from his own party poses biggest challenge for Mahathir
Article Abstract:
Analysts believe that the biggest political challenge facing Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is not the coming general election but the scheduled United Malays National Organization (UMNO) triennial election. There are indications that other UMNO politicians are maneuvering to unseat Mahathir from the party leadership. This perception is bolstered by Mahathir's apparent attempts to solidify political support within the party.
