Managing variances in manufacturing system design
Article Abstract:
Two issues in manufacturing system design, namely the resource allocation problem and the product grouping problem, are considered to analyse how uncertainties in demand and production should be included into manufacturing system design problems. The resource allocation problem considers the issue of how uncertainties are handled during an actual processing capacity and a stored capacity. The product grouping problem, on the other hand, the issue of how production lines are designed when each line is dedicated to some set of products.

On balancing variances of station processing times in unpaced lines
Article Abstract:
A proposed conceptual generalization is presented to reconcile contradictions in studies on the bowl, symmetry and spike in variance allocation patterns. Simulation results show that the optimal bowl appears box-shaped in the case of lines with five stations or lesser such that the proposed approach becomes unsuitable. The depth of the bowl is indirectly related to increases in N or B. Thus, with nine stations or more, the optimal bowl becomes very shallow and cannot be optimally addressed by existing variance allocation methods.

Reordering strategies for a newsboy-type product
Article Abstract:
Reordering strategies for a newsboy-type product during a season or a period is studied. It was found that the reordering strategy can considerably increase profits as long as the product's profit margin is not very high. The study also developed solution procedures to locate the best mean to capitalize on the reorder opportunity.
