Manitoba's movie hunger
Article Abstract:
Manitoba has a thriving movie industry due largely to the 35% tax credit on salaries and 22.5% on total production costs that the province gives to moviemakers. It also provides development financing of up to C$25,000 and production financing up to C$400,000 for films to be made in the province. Manitoba makes sure that film locations are within two hours drive, that filmmakers have access to cheap labor and the local governments are willing to accomodate the wishes of movie crews. The Film Office of the City of Winnipeg even waives permit fees, provides police offers and free facilities when the city is used as a movie location.

Manitoba election ads spark heat
Article Abstract:
TV advertisements made to look like news reports and aired during newscasts have created controversy in Manitoba's electoral campaigns. For instance, TV spots for Premier Gary Filmon's PC platform were being passed off as TV news items fronted by former TV reporter Sandy Krawchenko. On the other hand, the NDP's TV spots featured a blond 'reporter' whose street interviews are interrupted when her subjects point out the promise broken by the Tories during the 1995 elections.
